You've booked your first shiroabhyanga session at Raipur Spa. You've heard about the ancient Ayurvedic head massage — the medicated oils, the Marma points, the deep relaxation — but you are not quite sure what to expect when you walk through the door. This guide will walk you through every step of your first shiroabhyanga experience in Raipur, from what to do before you arrive to how to care for yourself afterward, so you can get the maximum benefit from this powerful Ayurvedic treatment.
Before Your Session: Preparation for Maximum Benefit
Hair and Scalp Preparation
The most important pre-session instruction is to avoid washing your hair on the day of your shiroabhyanga appointment. Your natural scalp sebum (the oil your sebaceous glands produce) actually plays a beneficial role during the treatment — it combines with the medicated Ayurvedic oil to enhance penetration and creates a more comfortable friction coefficient for the massage movements. Clean hair straight from the shower has stripped sebum, which means the medicated oil has to work harder to penetrate. However, if you have a very oily scalp condition, a light wash the previous day is fine.
Tie up or pin your hair before arriving if it is long — your therapist will undo it during the session, but arriving with it secured prevents tangles from the journey.
Food and Hydration
Eat a light meal at least two hours before your session. A full stomach during head massage can cause nausea, as the massage stimulates the vagus nerve which has connections to digestive function. Conversely, arriving completely empty-stomached can cause lightheadedness after treatment. A moderate, easily digestible meal two hours prior is ideal. Drink adequate water before and after your session to support the lymphatic drainage effects of the massage.
Clothing
Wear comfortable, loose clothing that allows easy access to your neck and shoulders. A shirt or top that unbuttons or has a wide neck opening is ideal. The therapist will drape towels appropriately, but they need to access the full shoulder and upper back area. Avoid wearing your best white shirt — there is some possibility of oil spotting despite the therapist's careful application technique.
Mental Preparation
Arrive five to ten minutes early to allow yourself to transition from the pace of daily life into a receptive, relaxed state. The more fully you can "arrive" mentally and allow yourself to receive the treatment, the deeper the therapeutic effect. Many clients find that turning off their phone during the session enhances the experience significantly.
Arriving at Raipur Spa — The Consultation
Your first shiroabhyanga session at Raipur Spa begins with a brief but important consultation. Your therapist will ask about your primary concerns — whether you are coming primarily for hair care, stress relief, headache management, or general wellness. They will ask about any medical conditions, particularly neck or cervical issues, skin sensitivities, allergies, or pregnancy, to ensure the treatment is appropriately adapted for you.
The therapist will conduct a quick Prakriti (Dosha constitution) assessment — asking about your physical characteristics, digestive patterns, sleep quality, and stress response. This assessment guides the selection of the most beneficial medicated oil for your specific constitution and current imbalances. Even if you are skeptical about Ayurvedic constitutional theory, the practical result is that you receive an oil that is well-matched to your skin type, hair type, and the specific condition you are seeking to address.
The Treatment Room Experience
You will be escorted to a private, calm treatment room. Soft, relaxing background music and gentle aromatherapy (typically based on Lavender or Sandalwood, appropriate for calming Vata and Pitta) set the sensory environment. The lighting is dimmed to encourage relaxation. The room is at a comfortable temperature — on Raipur's hot days, it will be pleasantly cool, and in winter months, comfortably warm.
You will be seated in a comfortable reclining chair or on a massage table in a semi-supine position that gives the therapist full access to the head, neck, and shoulders without requiring you to strain your neck. A fresh towel is placed over your shoulders to protect your clothing from oil. The therapist will warm the selected oil to approximately body temperature using an oil warmer — you will see this being done and you are welcome to feel the oil temperature before it is applied.
The Session Step by Step — What You Will Feel
Phase 1: Shoulder and Upper Back (10 minutes)
The session begins not at your head but at your shoulders and upper back. Effleurage strokes work upward from the mid-back to the base of the neck, gradually increasing in pressure. You may feel some initial tenderness if you carry significant tension in your trapezius muscles — this is normal and passes within a few minutes as the muscles release. The warmth of the oil and the rhythmic pressure will begin to calm your nervous system within the first five minutes.
Phase 2: Neck and Occipital Work (10 minutes)
The therapist moves to the neck — both the front and sides (sternocleidomastoid muscles) and the back (semispinalis and suboccipital muscles). Deep sustained pressure along the occipital ridge at the base of the skull is a distinctive and particularly effective part of shiroabhyanga. This sub-occipital release may produce a pleasant "opening" sensation and can cause the eyes to feel heavy and droopy — a sign that the parasympathetic nervous system is beginning to dominate. Some people feel mild tingling down the back of the head and neck as restricted circulation is restored.
Phase 3: Scalp Massage (20 minutes)
This is the heart of shiroabhyanga. The therapist applies warm medicated oil directly to your scalp using a pouring technique, then begins working it in with their fingertips in systematic sections — starting at the frontal hairline, moving through the parietal regions, and concluding at the vertex (crown) and temporal areas. The movements combine friction (deep circular movements that mobilize the scalp over the skull), petrissage (rhythmic squeezing and lifting of the scalp tissue), and tapotement (light percussion). Each movement serves a specific physiological purpose in improving circulation and tissue health.
During the Marma point work — which is interspersed throughout the scalp massage — you may experience interesting sensations: a feeling of deep stillness, warmth radiating through the head, or even mild emotional release. Some clients feel tearful without any specific sad thought — this is a natural response to the release of accumulated emotional tension held in the occipital and temporal areas. It is completely normal and should be embraced rather than suppressed.
Phase 4: Face Pressure Points (10 minutes)
Many shiroabhyanga protocols conclude with a gentle face massage that addresses the Sinus Marma points around the nose and cheeks, the orbital Marma points around the eyes (excellent for reducing eye strain from screen use), and the Sthapani point between the eyebrows. This is a deeply relaxing phase — many clients fall asleep during it. Sinus congestion often clears immediately as the facial pressure points are released.
Post-Massage Rest
After the massage, you will rest in the treatment chair or table for five to ten minutes before rising. This rest period is important — the circulatory and nervous system changes need time to stabilize before you return to upright. Many clients feel profoundly relaxed to the point of mild disorientation immediately after shiroabhyanga — this is completely normal and passes within fifteen to twenty minutes.
After Your Session — Post-Treatment Care
Retaining the Oil
The most important post-treatment instruction is to retain the medicated oil on your scalp for as long as possible. Minimum two to four hours is recommended. Overnight retention (washing in the morning) is optimal. This allows the active compounds in the medicated oil to penetrate the deeper follicular structures and perifollicluar tissue, completing the therapeutic effect that the massage has initiated. Rinse with a mild, sulfate-free shampoo using lukewarm — not hot — water.
Rest and Recovery
Plan to have a quiet, gentle rest of the day after your first shiroabhyanga session. Avoid heavy exercise, alcohol, and mentally demanding work for the remainder of the day. Drink warm water or herbal tea (Brahmi or Ashwagandha tea is ideal). Eat a light, warm, easily digestible meal — avoid cold foods, which can counter the warming circulatory effects of the treatment. Sleep will come easily and deeply the night after shiroabhyanga — plan to enjoy an early bedtime.
What to Expect the Next Day
Most first-time shiroabhyanga recipients wake the next morning feeling notably well-rested, mentally clear, and physically lighter. Some people experience mild neck or shoulder soreness for twenty-four hours, especially if the muscles were significantly tense — similar to muscle soreness after exercise. This passes completely within a day and is followed by a deep sense of muscular ease. Your hair will feel deeply conditioned and lustrous after washing out the oil.
