Your First Netra Tarpana Session in Raipur — Beginner's Guide: What to Expect

If you have never experienced Netra Tarpana before, it is completely natural to feel a mix of curiosity and apprehension. This Ayurvedic eye therapy — which involves bathing your eyes in warm medicated ghee — sounds unusual at first, but thousands of people across India undergo it regularly with outstanding results. At Raipur Spa, we guide every first-time client through every step so there are no surprises. This guide walks you through exactly what to expect before, during, and after your very first Netra Tarpana session.

Before Your Appointment

What to Do the Night Before

Sleep well and avoid alcohol or excessive spicy food the evening before your Netra Tarpana. Try to reduce screen time significantly in the final 2–3 hours before bed — your eyes will be more receptive to the treatment if they are already rested. Remove contact lenses before sleeping and do not wear them on the day of your appointment.

Morning of Your Session

Arrive at Raipur Spa without any eye makeup, mascara, kohl, or eyeliner. These products interfere with the ghee absorption and can irritate the eyes during the treatment. Wear comfortable, loose clothing — you will be lying down for 30–45 minutes total. Have a light meal before arriving; it is not recommended to receive Netra Tarpana on a completely empty or overly full stomach.

Intake Consultation

When you arrive, our Ayurvedic practitioner will sit with you for a 10-minute intake assessment. Be prepared to answer questions about your eye symptoms (dryness, strain, blurring, redness), your daily screen time, sleep quality, stress levels, and any existing eye conditions or medications. This assessment determines which medicated ghee formulation — typically Triphala ghee, Panchakola ghee, or plain clarified ghee for sensitive eyes — is most appropriate for your first session.

During the Session: Step by Step

Step 1 — Getting Settled

You will be led to a private treatment room and asked to lie flat on a padded Ayurvedic treatment table. A pillow supports your neck and a light blanket covers your body. The room is kept warm, quiet, and softly lit. Soft instrumental music plays in the background. Many first-time clients say this initial settling phase alone is deeply calming.

Step 2 — Face Cleanse

The therapist gently cleanses the skin around your eyes with a warm herbal cotton pad, removing any residual oils, dust, or contaminants. This is a delicate process — nothing is applied inside the eye at this stage.

Step 3 — Building the Dough Dam

This is the most unusual part for first-timers. The therapist uses specially prepared black gram flour dough — kneaded to a soft, pliable consistency — to build two small circular walls around each of your eye sockets. These walls press gently against the orbital bone and form a watertight seal. You will feel a slight pressure around the eyes as the dam is shaped. It should not be painful; speak up immediately if it feels too tight.

Once both dams are in place, the therapist tests the seal by pressing lightly and confirming no gaps exist. This step takes about 5 minutes and requires you to stay still with your eyes gently closed.

Step 4 — Pouring the Medicated Ghee

The medicated ghee has been warming in a small vessel throughout the preparation. The therapist checks the temperature (40–42°C) and then slowly pours the warm ghee into each eye dam using a small ladle. You will feel a wave of gentle warmth spreading around and over your eyes — many clients describe it as the feeling of warm sunlight on closed eyelids, but more enveloping.

Once the ghee reaches a comfortable level inside the dam, the therapist will ask you to slowly open your eyes. This is the moment most first-timers find most surprising. Opening your eyes in a pool of warm ghee feels strange for about 2–3 seconds — there may be a mild stinging sensation as the ghee makes first contact with the conjunctiva — but this passes within a few blinks and gives way to a deeply soothing, heavy sensation.

Step 5 — The Blink Exercise

With your eyes submerged in ghee, the therapist guides you through a slow blink sequence: open fully, hold for three counts, close gently, hold for three counts, repeat. This rhythmic blinking helps the ghee penetrate the conjunctival surfaces more effectively. You will do this for approximately 15–20 minutes. Most clients drift into a semi-meditative state during this phase.

Step 6 — Ghee Removal and Cool Compress

The therapist carefully removes the ghee using soft cotton swabs, then lifts the dough dams. A cool herbal compress soaked in rose water or Triphala decoction is then placed over closed eyes for 5 minutes to close the pores and complete the therapy. This final compress feels refreshing and grounding after the warmth of the ghee phase.

Immediately After the Session

When you sit up, your vision may appear slightly blurry or hazy for 5–15 minutes — this is completely normal and is caused by the residual ghee film over the cornea. Do not rub your eyes. The haziness clears naturally as you blink. Most clients report that once the initial haze clears, their vision feels unusually sharp, bright, and clear — as if a filter has been lifted.

Your eyes may feel heavier than usual and deeply relaxed. This is Tarpana working — the Ayurvedic word literally means "satiation." Your eye tissues have been fed and are resting.

What to Do After Netra Tarpana

  • Avoid screens for at least 2–3 hours after the session
  • Do not expose your eyes to bright sunlight immediately — wear sunglasses when stepping outside
  • Avoid swimming or water contact for 24 hours
  • Do not apply any eye makeup for the rest of the day
  • Drink warm water or herbal tea — hydration supports the detox process
  • Rest if possible; even a 20-minute nap post-treatment deepens the benefit

What Results to Expect

After a single session, most first-time clients at Raipur Spa report reduced eye redness, noticeably less dryness, and a sense of lightness and clarity in the eyes. The headaches associated with screen fatigue are often reduced within a few hours. For chronic conditions, the results build progressively over multiple sessions — a course of 5 consecutive sessions typically produces the most dramatic improvement in persistent dry eye or digital strain symptoms.

Is It Safe? Any Side Effects?

Netra Tarpana is extremely safe when performed by trained practitioners using sterile, pharmaceutical-grade medicated ghee. At Raipur Spa, we use freshly prepared ghee that is never reused between clients. The only commonly reported "side effect" is the brief blurriness immediately post-treatment, which clears within minutes. Clients with known ghee allergies or active eye infections should not undergo this treatment.
