Prenatal Massage vs Regular Massage - What Is the Difference?

If you are pregnant and considering a massage in Raipur, you may be wondering whether you need a specialist prenatal massage or whether a regular massage will do. The answer matters - and this guide explains exactly why prenatal massage is different and why those differences are important for your safety.

The Core Differences

1. Positioning

Regular massage: Typically performed face-down (prone) and face-up (supine) on a standard massage table.

Prenatal massage: Uses a side-lying position with supportive pillows under the head, between the knees and under the belly. Face-down position is never used - it compresses the abdomen and places pressure on the uterus. Lying flat on the back for extended periods is also avoided after 20 weeks as it can compress the vena cava vein, reducing blood flow to the baby.

2. Pressure Points Avoided

Regular massage: All acupressure points may be worked.

Prenatal massage: Specific pressure points - particularly on the ankles (SP6), wrists (LI4) and sacrum - are associated with uterine stimulation and are strictly avoided during pregnancy. A trained prenatal therapist knows exactly which points to avoid.

3. Pressure and Techniques

Regular massage: Deep tissue, trigger point and strong compressions may be applied anywhere.

Prenatal massage: Deep pressure on the legs is avoided due to increased DVT (blood clot) risk during pregnancy. Abdominal massage is performed only with the gentlest, most superficial strokes if at all. Pressure is generally gentler overall.

4. Oils Used

Regular massage: May use any massage oil or essential oil blend.

Prenatal massage: Only pregnancy-safe oils are used. Many essential oils are contraindicated during pregnancy (including rosemary, clary sage, peppermint in high concentrations, and several others). At Raipur SPA, we use coconut oil and sweet almond oil - both confirmed safe for pregnancy.

5. Therapist Training

Regular massage: Standard massage training.

Prenatal massage: Requires additional specialist training in pregnancy anatomy, contraindications, positioning and trimester-specific protocols. Our therapists at Raipur SPA hold this specialist training.

Can a Regular Massage Harm a Pregnant Woman?

An untrained therapist who works deep pressure on the legs, uses contraindicated essential oils or positions a pregnant client incorrectly could cause harm. This is why it is essential to specifically book a prenatal massage with a qualified therapist rather than a standard massage.
