The Ancient Science
What Is Abhyanga Massage?
Abhyanga (pronounced ab-hee-AHN-gah) is one of the most revered therapies in Ayurveda — India's 5,000-year-old science of life. The name comes from Sanskrit: abhi (toward) + anga (limb/body), meaning "to lovingly oil the body."
Unlike conventional massages that focus on muscle manipulation, Abhyanga is a holistic medicated oil therapy. Warm herbal oils are applied to the entire body using long flowing strokes along the limbs and circular movements at joints — specifically targeting the skin's deeper layers, connective tissue, and the body's 107 marma (vital energy) points.
In Ayurveda, Abhyanga is considered dinacharya — a daily self-care ritual essential for maintaining health, slowing aging, and achieving mental clarity. Regular practice is said to strengthen ojas (vital essence), the Ayurvedic equivalent of immunity and vitality.
Therapeutic Oils
Dosha-Specific Oils We Use
Each oil is chosen based on your Ayurvedic body constitution (prakriti) and current imbalances. Our therapists assess your dosha before each session.
The king of Ayurvedic oils. Warming, heavy, and deeply penetrating — ideal for Vata dosha. Nourishes dry skin, calms anxiety, relieves joint pain, and improves circulation. Best for winter and for those with cold, dry, or anxious constitutions.
Cooling and anti-inflammatory — perfect for Pitta dosha. Soothes sensitive or inflamed skin, reduces heat and irritation, and has natural antimicrobial properties. Ideal for summer, for those prone to inflammation, redness, or anger.
Light and stimulating — suited for Kapha dosha. Mustard oil is heating and helps mobilize stagnation, reduce water retention, and stimulate lymphatic drainage. Sunflower oil is lighter for general use. Ideal for heavy, sluggish, or congested constitutions.
A classical Ayurvedic medicated oil made from 50+ herbs including ashwagandha, shatavari, and bala. Specifically formulated for musculoskeletal conditions — joint pain, arthritis, frozen shoulder, and muscle weakness. Deep-penetrating and highly therapeutic.
A brain tonic oil used for scalp and head massage. Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) is the ultimate Ayurvedic herb for memory, focus, and stress relief. Promotes hair growth, prevents premature greying, and deeply calms the mind. Included in our Royal package.
A medicated oil prepared with bala herb, sesame oil, and milk. Highly recommended for neurological conditions, weakness, paralysis, and extreme fatigue. Also excellent for women's health, reproductive vitality, and post-delivery recovery. Our most potent restorative blend.
The Technique
6 Key Abhyanga Techniques We Apply
Our trained therapists follow the authentic Ayurvedic protocol with each technique serving a specific therapeutic purpose.
Anuloma Strokes (With the Grain)
Long, smooth strokes applied in the direction of body hair — from shoulder to fingertips, from hip to toes. This follows the natural flow of vata in the body and stimulates venous and lymphatic return toward the heart.
Mandala (Circular Joint Work)
Circular massage applied at all major joints — shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, ankles. Lubricates the synovial fluid, improves joint mobility, and nourishes the cartilage with therapeutic oils.
Marma Point Activation
Precise pressure and rotation on the 107 marma points — the body's vital energy junctions. Activating marma points releases blocked prana (life force), stimulates organ function, and creates profound energetic shifts. Our signature technique.
Spinal Channel Massage
Dedicated long strokes along the paravertebral muscles flanking the spine. Calms the central nervous system, relieves back tension, and supports the flow of prana through the sushumna nadi (central energy channel).
Scalp and Cranial Abhyanga
Warm Brahmi or sesame oil worked into the scalp with firm circular movements, followed by gentle cranial holds. Stimulates hair follicles, nourishes the brain through marma points on the head, and induces deep mental calm.
Pada Abhyanga (Foot Therapy)
The feet contain nerve endings connected to every organ in the body (similar to reflexology). Warm oil foot massage with thumb pressure on sole points closes the session, grounds the body's energy, and promotes restful sleep after treatment.
Why Abhyanga
6 Proven Benefits of Regular Abhyanga
Modern research increasingly validates what Ayurveda has known for millennia about warm oil massage therapy.
Warm oil on the skin stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system — the "rest and digest" mode. Studies show it reduces cortisol, lowers blood pressure, and decreases heart rate variability within a single session.
The directed strokes of Abhyanga significantly improve venous return and lymphatic drainage. Better circulation means faster removal of toxins, improved nutrient delivery to cells, and reduced swelling or water retention.
Regular Abhyanga lubricates joints, reduces morning stiffness, and relieves chronic muscle tension. Particularly beneficial for Raipur's working population suffering from desk-related back, neck, and shoulder pain.
Medicated oils penetrate all 7 dhatus (tissue layers) according to Ayurveda. The result: dramatically improved skin texture, reduced dryness, natural glow, slower visible aging, and protection against Raipur's harsh climate effects.
Abhyanga is one of the most effective natural sleep therapies. The parasympathetic activation and marma point stimulation create conditions for deep, restorative sleep. Most clients report the best night's sleep of their lives after their first session.
In Ayurveda, ojas is the ultimate refined essence of all body tissues — equated to immunity, vitality, and radiance. Regular Abhyanga builds ojas, making you more resilient to stress, infections, and fatigue. You feel genuinely stronger with each session.
Ideal For
Who Benefits Most from Abhyanga?
Abhyanga is appropriate for most people, but especially transformative for these profiles.
If you experience dry skin, anxiety, restless mind, poor sleep, cold hands and feet, or irregular digestion — you likely have Vata imbalance. Abhyanga with warm sesame oil is the single most effective Ayurvedic therapy for Vata and brings rapid, dramatic relief.
For Raipur's professionals dealing with work pressure, deadlines, and mental exhaustion, Abhyanga offers a complete nervous system reset. The warm oil, rhythmic strokes, and marma activation create a state of deep relaxation that no amount of rest alone can replicate.
Abhyanga with Mahanarayan oil is a classical treatment for Vata-type arthritis, joint stiffness, and musculoskeletal pain. Regular weekly sessions have been shown to significantly reduce joint inflammation and improve mobility in research trials.
Raipur's climate — extreme heat in summer, dry winters — strips moisture from the skin. Abhyanga's medicated oils deeply nourish all tissue layers, restore natural moisture balance, reduce fine lines, and impart a lasting glow that cosmetic products cannot match.
Abhyanga has been traditionally recommended for new mothers in India for centuries. It helps the body recover from the depletion of pregnancy and childbirth, rebuilds strength and vitality, tones loose skin, and helps with postpartum anxiety and mood.
As a preparatory treatment in Panchakarma (Ayurvedic detox), Abhyanga loosens and mobilizes accumulated toxins (ama) from the tissues into the digestive tract for elimination. Even as a standalone therapy, it supports the body's natural detox processes through enhanced lymphatic flow.

Your Experience
Your Abhyanga Session Journey
Every session follows a thoughtful Ayurvedic protocol designed for maximum therapeutic effect.
Arrival and Consultation
Arrive 10 minutes early. Your therapist conducts a brief dosha assessment — asking about your digestion, sleep, skin, energy, and stress. This determines your oil selection and pressure preferences.
Oil Warming and Preparation
Your selected oil is warmed to the precise Ayurvedic temperature — warm enough to penetrate the tissues but not uncomfortable. You settle into the heated treatment room with light, calming music.
Abhyanga Protocol Begins
Starting at the scalp, your therapist works downward through the body — neck, chest, arms, abdomen, back, legs, and feet. Firm long strokes alternate with circular joint work and precise marma pressure.
Steam Therapy (Royal Package)
In the Royal package, a steam session follows the oil massage. Heat opens the pores and drives the medicinal oils deeper into the tissue layers — dramatically enhancing their therapeutic effect.
Pada Abhyanga Closing
The session closes with a dedicated warm oil foot massage — activating the foot's nerve junctions and grounding the body's energy after the full treatment. This is the most deeply relaxing part of the session.
Rest and Integration
You rest for 15-20 minutes after the session — this is not optional. The Ayurvedic integration period allows the oils to penetrate fully and the nervous system to consolidate the treatment's effects. Herbal tea is served.
