What is Kizhi?

The word Kizhi comes from Malayalam, meaning a bundle or pouch. In this ancient Ayurvedic therapy, cloth boluses — tightly packed with specific medicinal herbs, herbal powders, or specially cooked medicinal rice — are dipped repeatedly in warm medicated oil and applied with firm, rhythmic pressure to the body in a systematic pattern.

Unlike ordinary massage, Kizhi works through two simultaneous mechanisms: the heat and pressure of the bolus opens the skin's pores and dilates blood vessels at the treatment site, while the medicinal herbs inside the bolus transfer their active compounds transdermally directly into the affected tissue. The result is a depth of therapeutic penetration that no topical application or oral medicine can match.

Described in the classical Ayurvedic text Ashtanga Hridayam under Swedana (sudation therapies), Kizhi is prescribed for conditions involving Vata and Kapha aggravation in the musculoskeletal system — arthritis, spondylosis, sports injuries, muscle stiffness, and neurological conditions affecting movement. At Scale Raipur SPA, we offer three Kizhi variants: Elakizhi (leaf bolus), Podikizhi (powder bolus), and Njavara Kizhi (rice bolus).

Types of Kizhi We Offer

Each variant uses different medicinal ingredients targeting different conditions

🌿
Elakizhi (Leaf Bolus)
Boluses packed with fresh medicinal leaves — Nirgundi, Calotropis, Tamarind, Lemon, and Coconut. Ideal for Vata-type joint pain, neuralgias, and cold stiffness. The fresh leaves release volatile oils with potent anti-inflammatory action.
🌾
Podikizhi (Powder Bolus)
Dry herbal powder boluses containing 12+ classical herbs including Kolakulattadi Churna. Generates intense therapeutic heat. Best for Kapha conditions — obesity-related joint strain, fluid retention, oedema, and sluggish circulation.
🍚
Njavara Kizhi (Rice Bolus)
Boluses of Njavara rice cooked in cow's milk and herbal decoction. Nourishing rather than heating — for wasting diseases, post-stroke rehab, neuromuscular conditions, and where other variants are too stimulating.
🌺
Mutta Kizhi (Egg Bolus)
Egg-based bolus therapy — used specifically for frozen shoulder and adhesive capsulitis. The egg protein provides deep tissue nourishment while the warm bolus breaks down adhesions and fibrotic tissue around the shoulder joint.
🏖️
Valuka Sweda (Sand Bolus)
Medicated sand bolus providing sustained, even heat across large muscle groups. Used for lumbago, chronic lower back pain, and degenerative disc conditions where dry heat therapy is more appropriate than oil-based Kizhi.
🌙
Navarakizhi Combination
Our Royal package combines Elakizhi for inflamed joints with Njavara Kizhi for systemic nourishment — the classical Panchakarma pairing that addresses both the pain and the underlying tissue depletion simultaneously.

Benefits of Kizhi Therapy

Scientifically validated Ayurvedic healing for the musculoskeletal system

🦴
Arthritis Pain Relief
Clinical studies show Kizhi significantly reduces joint pain scores in both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The combination of heat, medicated oil, and herb transdermal absorption reduces synovial inflammation and cartilage friction.
🔧
Cervical & Lumbar Spondylosis
The targeted bolus application on cervical and lumbar vertebral joints reduces disc compression symptoms, nerve root irritation, and paraspinal muscle spasm — often achieving relief within 3-5 sessions.
💪
Muscle Stiffness & Spasm
Deep penetrating heat from the herbal bolus relaxes hypertonic muscles, breaks up trigger points, and restores normal muscle length and flexibility — far more effectively than topical heat packs alone.
Sports Injury Recovery
Kizhi accelerates healing of muscle strains, ligament sprains, and tendinitis. The herbal actives reduce inflammatory cytokines, improve local circulation, and stimulate tissue repair at the cellular level.
🧠
Neurological Conditions
Njavara Kizhi specifically nourishes nerve tissue and reduces neuroinflammation. Used in post-stroke rehabilitation, peripheral neuropathy, and sciatica to restore sensation and motor function.
🌊
Circulation & Detoxification
The sustained heat opens peripheral blood vessels and lymphatic channels, flushing metabolic waste products and inflammatory mediators from deep tissue — the same mechanism as therapeutic sweating in classical Ayurveda.

Your Kizhi Session Journey

Every step precisely executed for maximum therapeutic benefit

1

Ayurvedic Assessment

Your therapist assesses your dosha constitution, specific pain patterns, affected joints or muscles, and any contraindications. Based on this, they select the appropriate Kizhi variant (Elakizhi for Vata conditions, Podikizhi for Kapha, Njavara for depletion) and the correct medicated oil for your case.

2

Bolus Preparation

Fresh medicinal herbs or powders are tightly packed into cloth pouches. For Elakizhi, the leaves are briefly sauteed in medicated oil to activate their volatile compounds before packing. For Podikizhi, the herbal powder blend is measured precisely. Each bolus is tied tightly to create firm, even pressure when applied.

3

Oil Preparation & Body Positioning

Medicated oil appropriate to your condition is warmed in a vessel. You lie on the treatment table in the optimal position for accessing your affected joints. A preliminary oil application is made to the treatment area to protect the skin and enhance the thermal conductivity of the bolus applications.

4

Kizhi Application

The boluses are dipped in the warm medicated oil and applied to your joints and muscles in a firm, rhythmic, rotational pattern. Your therapist maintains a steady cadence — alternating between two boluses to maintain consistent temperature, dipping them repeatedly in the oil vessel throughout the session. The pressure, rhythm, and direction of strokes follow classical Ayurvedic technique for the specific condition being treated.

5

Targeted Deep Work

After the initial full-body or full-joint coverage, your therapist focuses on the primary affected areas — spending additional time on the most problematic joints or muscle groups. The temperature of the bolus is carefully maintained throughout. At this stage many clients experience a deep burning sensation at the affected joint followed by profound relief as the heat penetrates the synovial capsule.

6

Cool-Down & Post-Treatment Guidance

After Kizhi, a brief cool-down period is important — do not shower for at least two hours as the medicated oil and herbal residue continue working. Your therapist provides personalized post-treatment recommendations: dietary adjustments to avoid aggravating your dosha imbalance, specific stretches or yoga postures to maintain the mobility gained, and the recommended frequency for your treatment course.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Kizhi therapy in Raipur

What is Kizhi massage and how is it different from regular massage?
Kizhi is an Ayurvedic therapy using warm herbal bolus pouches applied to the body with firm rhythmic pressure — it is not a traditional massage at all. The therapeutic mechanism is entirely different: rather than manipulating soft tissue with hands, Kizhi delivers deep penetrating heat combined with the transdermal absorption of medicinal herbs directly into affected joints and muscles. The boluses contain herbs specifically selected for your condition, making each session a targeted medicinal treatment, not just relaxation.
How much does Kizhi massage cost in Raipur?
At Scale Raipur SPA, Classic Elakizhi starts at Rs.1,199 for 60 minutes. The Signature Podikizhi session is Rs.1,699 for 90 minutes — this is our most commonly recommended package for arthritis and spondylosis patients as it covers the full body. The Royal Panchakarma Kizhi package at Rs.2,499 for 120 minutes combines Abhyanga with comprehensive multi-variant Kizhi therapy. All packages include the Ayurvedic consultation, medicated oils, and post-session care.
What is the difference between Elakizhi and Podikizhi?
Elakizhi uses boluses filled with fresh medicinal leaves — Nirgundi (Vitex negundo), Calotropis, Tamarind, and Coconut leaves. It is preferred for Vata-type conditions: neuralgias, cold-type joint pain, muscle wasting, and stiffness that worsens in cold weather. Podikizhi uses dry herbal powder boluses generating more intense heat. It is indicated for Kapha-type conditions: heavy, fluid-retaining joints, obesity-related strain, and sluggish circulation. Your therapist determines which is appropriate after the intake consultation.
Is Kizhi effective for knee osteoarthritis?
Yes — Kizhi is one of Ayurveda's most evidence-supported therapies for knee osteoarthritis. Multiple randomized controlled trials have demonstrated significant reductions in WOMAC (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index) pain scores after a 7-14 day course of Kizhi, with improvements in walking distance and stair-climbing ability. The combination of deep thermal stimulation, improved synovial fluid circulation, and anti-inflammatory herb absorption directly addresses the key pathological features of knee osteoarthritis.
Can Kizhi help with cervical spondylosis and neck pain?
Absolutely. Cervical spondylosis is one of the primary indications for Elakizhi. The targeted bolus application over the cervical vertebrae and surrounding musculature reduces paraspinal muscle spasm, improves blood flow to the compressed nerve roots, and reduces the perineural inflammation that causes radiating arm pain. Most patients with cervical spondylosis notice significant pain reduction and improved neck mobility within 5-7 sessions.
How hot are the boluses? Will it burn?
The boluses are maintained at 45-55 degrees Celsius — hot enough to achieve therapeutic penetrating heat but well within the range that trained skin tissue can safely tolerate. The cloth covering provides a buffer that prevents direct skin contact with the hottest herb particles. During your first session, your therapist will check your heat tolerance and adjust accordingly. You should feel intense warmth at the treatment site — this is therapeutic. If you feel actual burning pain, tell your therapist immediately.
How many Kizhi sessions do I need for arthritis relief?
For acute pain relief, even a single session produces noticeable benefit lasting 3-5 days. For chronic arthritis management, classical Ayurveda recommends an initial course of 7 to 14 consecutive daily sessions, which typically produces lasting improvement over weeks to months. Following the initial course, monthly or twice-monthly maintenance sessions sustain the benefit and prevent deterioration. Most of our arthritis clients at Scale Raipur SPA continue with monthly Kizhi sessions as part of their long-term wellness plan.
