Booking your first Nasyam session in Raipur can feel uncertain - after all, having oil administered through your nose is unfamiliar territory for most people. This guide walks you through exactly what happens before, during and after your Nasyam session at Raipur SPA so you arrive confident and get the most from your experience.
Before You Come: How to Prepare for Nasyam
A little preparation ensures your Nasyam session is comfortable and effective:
- Eat lightly beforehand - Avoid heavy meals for at least 2 hours before your session. A light breakfast or snack is fine. A full stomach makes it harder to recline comfortably and can cause nausea during the session.
- Avoid cold food and drinks - On the day of your Nasyam, avoid cold water, ice cream, cold beverages and refrigerated food from morning. Warm food and warm water are recommended.
- No heavy exercise - Avoid intense physical exertion for at least 3 hours before your session.
- Disclose medical history - Let our therapist know about any medications, current infections, recent nasal surgery, pregnancy, or menstruation (Nasyam is contraindicated during menstruation).
- Come with clean hair - The pre-Nasyam scalp massage and oil application mean you will have oil in your hair after the session. Wash your hair before coming or plan to wash it the same evening.
- Wear comfortable clothing - Loose, comfortable clothes are recommended as you will be reclining during the treatment. Wear something you do not mind if a little oil spills on.
Arriving at Raipur SPA for Nasyam
When you arrive at Raipur SPA for your Nasyam session, our reception team will welcome you and confirm your appointment. You will be asked to fill a brief health form covering your current symptoms, medical history and any medications you are taking.
Your assigned Panchakarma therapist will spend 5-8 minutes with you in a private consultation to understand:
- Your primary reason for seeking Nasyam (sinusitis, headaches, cervical issues, mental clarity etc.)
- Any current or recent nasal or respiratory conditions
- Your Prakriti (body constitution) if you know it, or a brief assessment
- Selection of the appropriate medicated oil for your condition
Step-by-Step: What Happens During Your Nasyam Session
Step 1 - Facial Steam Preparation (5-8 minutes)
You sit comfortably in a reclined chair. Your therapist applies warm herbal steam to your face and neck using a steam towel or steam device. This gently opens the pores of the facial skin, warms the nasal passages and loosens any accumulated mucus or Kapha. Many clients find this step immediately soothing.
Step 2 - Snehana: Facial and Scalp Oil Massage (15-20 minutes)
Your therapist applies warm sesame or herbal oil to your face, neck and scalp and performs a gentle Marma point massage. This pre-treatment is essential in classical Nasyam - it prepares the tissues for oil absorption, stimulates lymphatic drainage in the head-neck region and begins to relax the nervous system.
You may feel considerable relaxation during this phase. The massage follows traditional Ayurvedic Marma point sequences targeting areas connected to the sinuses, trigeminal nerve branches and cervical nerves.
Step 3 - Positioning for Nasyam (2 minutes)
You recline fully on the treatment table with a pillow supporting your neck to allow your head to tilt back slightly. A warm towel is placed over your shoulders. The room is warm and quiet. Your therapist warms the selected medicated oil to body temperature by placing the bottle in warm water.
Step 4 - Nasal Oil Administration (10-15 minutes)
Your therapist holds the warm oil dropper or applicator over your left nostril and administers the designated number of drops (typically 3-8 drops depending on the formulation and your condition). You breathe naturally. The therapist then repeats on the right nostril.
What you may experience: A distinct warmth spreading through your nasal passages and sometimes into your throat or behind your eyes. Some clients notice a slightly bitter or herbal taste at the back of the throat as excess oil drains. This is completely normal. There may be mild tingling or clearing sensation. Most clients find the sensation manageable and quickly become comfortable with it.
You remain reclined for 5-10 minutes after the oil administration, breathing gently and allowing the oil to be absorbed.
Step 5 - Nasya Kaval: Warm Gargle (5 minutes)
Your therapist prepares warm salted water or herbal decoction. You gargle vigorously 2-3 times. This clears loosened mucus and oil that has drained from the sinuses to the pharynx. Clients often cough up thick mucus during this phase - a sign the treatment is working.
Step 6 - Post-Nasyam Steam Inhalation (8-10 minutes)
A final round of steam inhalation clears any remaining loosened material from the sinus cavities. At this stage many clients experience a dramatic improvement in nasal breathing - clearer and more open than they may have felt in months.
Step 7 - Rest and Aftercare Briefing (10 minutes)
You rest quietly in our relaxation area while your therapist provides specific aftercare instructions. A warm herbal tea or warm water is offered. Most clients feel pleasantly drowsy and clear-headed simultaneously.
After Your Nasyam Session: Critical Aftercare
How you care for yourself in the hours after Nasyam significantly affects the results:
- Avoid cold for 3 hours - No cold water, cold drinks, cold food, ice cream. This is the most important rule. Cold contracts the tissues just as the oil is being absorbed and reduces the therapeutic effect.
- No direct fan or AC on the head - Stay in a warm environment for at least 2 hours after your session.
- Eat warm, light food - Khichdi, dal rice, warm soup. Avoid heavy, fried or cold food for the rest of the day.
- Rest if possible - If you can take a 30-minute nap after the session, this enhances the deeply restorative effect of Nasyam.
- Do not suppress sneezing or coughing - These are the body's natural expulsion mechanisms. Allow them freely after Nasyam.
- Avoid hair washing - Do not wash your hair or head until the next morning to allow the scalp oil to complete its nourishing action.
What Results Can You Expect After Your First Session?
- Immediate improvement in nasal breathing clarity (most clients notice this right away)
- Feeling of lightness and spaciousness in the head
- Mental clarity and calm that many describe as similar to deep meditation
- Possible mild fatigue as the body begins its cleansing response
- Some clients experience a temporary increase in mucus discharge on day 1-2 as the sinuses clear - this is therapeutic and will resolve
