Kati Basti in Raipur
Ayurvedic Medicated Oil Lower Back Therapy
The most powerful Ayurvedic treatment for lower back pain, lumbar spondylosis, disc herniation, and sciatica. Warm medicated oil retained in a herbal dough dam on the lumbar spine — deeply nourishing the vertebrae, discs, and surrounding muscles from the inside out.
What Is Kati Basti?
Kati Basti (also spelled Kati Vasti) is a classical Ayurvedic treatment specifically designed for the lumbar spine and lower back. The name comes from Sanskrit: Kati (lower back, waist, or lumbar region) and Basti (to hold or retain). A ring-shaped dam made from black gram (urad dal) dough is placed on the lumbar region of the spine, sealed to the skin, and filled with warm medicated oil. The oil is retained within this chamber for 30 to 45 minutes, allowing the therapeutic compounds to penetrate deeply into the vertebral joints, intervertebral discs, ligaments, and musculature of the lower back.
This localized application of warm oil is uniquely effective because it maintains a sustained, concentrated therapeutic dose directly over the target anatomy — something no other treatment modality achieves. The heat improves circulation, the oil nourishes and lubricates the tissues, and the specific herbal compounds address the underlying pathology — whether Vata (dryness, degeneration), Pitta (inflammation), or a combination of both.
At Raipur Spa, our therapists are trained in authentic Kati Basti technique. The procedure includes preparatory lumbar massage before the dam application, careful monitoring of oil temperature throughout, and a post-treatment marma point massage to close the session.

How Kati Basti Works
Preparatory Lumbar Massage
The session begins with a 10 to 15-minute warm oil massage of the lumbar, sacral, and gluteal region. This prepares the tissue by improving circulation, warming the muscles, and creating receptivity for the deeper oil application. The therapist also assesses the area for tension patterns and specific tender points.
Dam Construction and Sealing
A ring of black gram dough is shaped into an oval or rectangular dam, approximately 3–4 inches tall, and carefully sealed to the skin around the lumbar spine. The seal is tested with a small amount of water before oil is applied to ensure no leakage.
Medicated Oil Application and Retention
Warm medicated oil is carefully poured into the dam until it fills to the brim. The oil temperature is monitored throughout the 30 to 45 minutes of retention — the therapist periodically removes and reheats the oil to maintain optimal therapeutic temperature. The sustained warmth drives the oil compounds deep into the vertebral joints and disc spaces.
Oil Drainage and Marma Massage
After the retention period, oil is drained and the dough dam removed. The therapist performs a focused marma (energy point) massage of the lumbar region, concentrating on Katikataruna marma (lumbar), Kukundara marma (sacroiliac), and related points. This closes the treatment and helps integrate the therapeutic effects.
Medicated Oils Used in Kati Basti
Oil selection is based on your specific condition and dosha assessment:
Mahanarayan Oil
The primary oil for vata-dominant lower back conditions. Contains over 50 herbs including Ashwagandha, Bala, and Shatavari in a sesame base. Deeply nourishing for joints, discs, and nervous tissue. Best for degenerative conditions, disc dryness, and age-related lumbar changes.
Dhanwantaram Oil
A classical formulation used for musculoskeletal conditions across Ayurveda. Particularly effective for structural back pain with weakness and stiffness. Nourishes the periosteum and joint capsule, and is the oil of choice for post-injury recovery and rehabilitation.
Ksheerabala Oil
Prepared with milk as the medium, this oil is especially indicated for nerve-related pain — sciatica, radiating back pain, and neuropathic conditions. The milk base carries the active compounds more effectively into nervous tissue. Essential for true disc herniation with nerve compression.
Sahacharadi Oil
Prepared from Sahachara and related herbs, this oil is used for Pitta-dominant back conditions — inflammatory lower back pain, warm and tender joints, and conditions with burning sensation. Also used for spastic conditions where the back muscles are in constant contraction.

Benefits of Kati Basti
Joint Lubrication
The warm oil penetrates and lubricates the facet joints of the lumbar spine, reducing bone-on-bone friction and restoring smooth, pain-free movement.
Disc Nourishment
Intervertebral discs are avascular — they receive nutrition only by diffusion. Kati Basti's sustained warmth and pressure improve this diffusion, nourishing dehydrated or degenerated discs.
Nerve Decompression
By relaxing the surrounding musculature and reducing tissue inflammation, Kati Basti indirectly reduces compression on spinal nerves — relieving sciatic and referred leg pain.
Inflammation Reduction
Anti-inflammatory herbs in the medicated oil — Nirgundi, Rasna, Eranda — reduce local Pitta aggravation and tissue inflammation, providing lasting pain relief beyond the session.
Muscle Relaxation
The sustained warmth releases deep paraspinal muscle spasm — particularly the erector spinae, multifidus, and quadratus lumborum — that conventional massage cannot consistently reach.
Restored Mobility
Guests consistently report significantly improved bending, rotation, and walking capacity after a course of Kati Basti — as the structural and muscular causes of restriction are addressed.
What Our Clients Say
"I had an L4-L5 disc problem for 2 years and had been told surgery was the only option. After 10 sessions of Kati Basti at Raipur Spa, I have 80% reduction in pain and no longer need surgery. The therapists are highly skilled and the treatment is completely authentic."
"As a truck driver I spend 10+ hours a day sitting. My lower back was in constant pain. Kati Basti every 2 weeks has completely changed my quality of life. The warm oil sensation during treatment is deeply relaxing, and the pain relief lasts 10 to 12 days."
"I have sciatica that used to shoot down my left leg. After the first Kati Basti session the intensity reduced by half. I did the 7-session course and the sciatica is now completely gone. I recommend every person with back pain to try this before going to surgery."
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Kati Basti and how does it work?
Kati Basti is an Ayurvedic treatment where a dough dam is placed on the lumbar spine and filled with warm medicated oil for 30 to 45 minutes. The oil penetrates the vertebral joints, discs, and muscles, providing deep lubrication, nourishment, and anti-inflammatory effects. It is the primary Ayurvedic treatment for lower back conditions.
Is Kati Basti effective for disc herniation?
Yes — Kati Basti is one of the most effective non-surgical approaches for disc herniation. It nourishes the dehydrated disc tissue, reduces the inflammation that amplifies nerve pain, and relaxes the muscular spasm that compounds disc-related symptoms. Most guests with confirmed disc herniation see significant improvement within 5 to 7 sessions.
How many sessions do I need for back pain?
For acute muscle-related back pain, 3 to 5 sessions typically provide substantial relief. For chronic conditions like lumbar spondylosis, disc problems, or sciatica, we recommend a course of 7 to 14 sessions for lasting results. Maintenance sessions once or twice monthly are recommended for ongoing management.
Is there any preparation required before Kati Basti?
No special preparation is needed. We recommend arriving with a light stomach — avoid a heavy meal within 2 hours before the session. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. If you have recent X-rays or MRI reports of your spine, bring them for our therapist to review before the session.
Can Kati Basti be combined with other treatments?
Yes — Kati Basti combines very well with Abhyanga (full body massage), Kizhi (herbal pouch therapy), and Greeva Basti (if cervical involvement is also present). Our Lumbar Healing Package includes Kati Basti with Kizhi for a comprehensive spinal treatment. For severe spinal conditions, a combination approach delivers the best results.
